Everyone in the Marine Conversation world is keeping an eye on the story of the Vaquita porpoise.
As a last effort to save the species, scientists and the Mexican government teamed up to capture the last estimated remaining 60 individuals to keep in captivity. However, after the capture of an adult female quickly led to her death, they are calling off the operation.
The best bet for the Vaquita porpoise was always to protect its environment. But with so few individuals left, the government of Mexico will need to decide how much time, money and effort they are going to put into its protections and if it’s worth stopping all fishing operations in the area.
